The Ranch
Rattlesnake Creek Cattle Company is located in Western Kansas in the semi-arid short to mid-grass region of the Central Plains. The bulls, cows, heifers and calves at the ranch are raised on native grasses and forage, with some supplemental protein and hay in winter months. The varied terrain of the ranch provides natural wind barriers and shelter from severe weather.
Our females are selected for conformation, easy fleshing, hormonal balance, and maternal instincts. Heifers and cows calve together, out in pasture, with as little intervention as possible. Our bulls are selected based on phenotype, hormonal expression and maternal lineage. As a result, our cattle are tough, adaptable, and can thrive with minimum input.

Starting in 2005, we began implementing restorative grazing practices, and adding cross fencing and water lines, to improve grazing capacity on the ranch. After this initial effort started to show results, more acreage was added to this strategic management plan, and we transitioned from rotational to pulse grazing. In this method, high numbers of cattle are put onto small plots for short bursts of grazing. As the most desirable grasses are grazed back but not completely consumed, they become healthier and more abundant. The less desirable plants are naturally out grown by the desirable species, creating healthier, more nutritious pasture. Today, over 50% of the ranch has been put into this carefully managed practice and the grazing capacity of the ranch has been greatly improved.

We take great care in the handling of our cattle, so they are cooperative and pleasant to work with. When sorting, doctoring, hauling, etc. we use low-stress practices, keeping our livestock calm and safe to handle.
